Want to be a good leader?

Don't fire your employees as Elon Musk did.

Letting go of an employee is hard, but don't do it over an email as Elon Musk did.

So, how to do it?

Here are the five rules you need to follow when it is time to let someone go.

1 - Do it in person whenever possible.

It will be uncomfortable but having a private conversation is the right thing to do. It displays care and respect toward your employee. Never do it over an email or text.

2 - Do it privately.

To respect and honor someone's values, have the conversation privately. If you deliver bad news, do so in your office with closed doors.

3 - Give the person your full attention.

Don't get distracted during the conversation. The impulse to turn your attention to less troubling matters is understandable, but you have responsibilities as a leader, and one of those responsibilities is to give your employee attention.

4 - Be honest but not brutal.

You don't need to tell the whole truth always. Minimize it if you know it will do more damage than necessary. Choose your words, tone of voice, and demeanor with care.

5 - Don't rush.

Being fired or laid off is a shock that needs time to absorb. It's a major, life-changing event. You owe the space and time to your employee to absorb the news.

Were you ever in a position where you had to let go of an employee? How did you do it?
