As a leader, our decisions can make or break the success of our organization. And no matter how careful we are, we may unknowingly be influenced by biases that impact our decision-making process. Here are five biases to watch out for: 👉🏻Affinity Bias: Favoring people who are similar to us in background, personality, or interests, even if they are not the best fit for a position. 👉🏻Contrast Effect Bias: Deciding based on previous experiences or comparison to others, rather than objective criteria. 👉🏻Halo/Horns Bias: Forming a positive or negative overall impression of someone based on a single trait or characteristic. 👉🏻Leniency Bias: Evaluating people more positively than they deserve, such as giving a good performance review to an underperforming employee. 👉🏻Confirmation Bias: Seeking out information that confirms our pre-existing beliefs and disregarding contradictory evidence. Being aware of these biases is crucial to making objective decisions. Combat them by seeking diverse perspectives, gathering objective data, and reflecting on your decisions. Remember, your decisions greatly impact your organization, so understanding your biases and striving for objective decision-making is essential for long-term success.
